This novice chase falling under Grade I Category extends over a distance of two miles one furlong and has eleven hurdles in its course. This Grade I category jump race is open to five year old horses.This race when it started in 1956 was run over a distance of two miles and later extended to two miles two furlongs in 1980. Its current distance was fixed in 1995.

The race as it is known today is in honour of Arkle, the winner of this race in 1963. The Irish Arkle is treated as a counterpart of Arkle Challenge Trophy held in England. On a number of occasions winners of Irish Arkle went on to win Arkle Challenge Trophy in England.Since its beginning in 1956 this jump race has been won by seven years old at least twenty six times. On a minimum of ten instances this race was won by six years old and on seven occasions by eight years old. In last year’s Irish Ankle races, the event was won by seven year old Real Dubh trained by Noel Meade. No horse has won this race more than once. Tom Deaper has been the most successful trainer with five wins at a stretch form 1963 to 1967.Of total Irish Arkle races held in last ten years, seven times it has been won by seven year olds that constituted exactly half of the total runners. Willie Mullins has been the most successful trainer in last ten years with three wins.This year the odds are in favour of Blackstairmountain. It could be challenged by Call the Police, Baily Green, Far Away So Close, and Cottrelsbooley.
